During 2010 and 2011 we are conducing several tours to give people and insight into the history and archaeology of (North) East Hampshire, starting with Old Winchester Hill to the East of Winchester.
This large Iron Age Hill Fort will be followed next year with more insight into how people lived, by visiting Butser Iron Age Farm, which also has a reconstructed Roman Villa.
Next we will visit Roman Silchester, which was a Roman Town, with its walls still in tact, during the University of Reading excavations – who have reached the boundary of the Roman and Iron Age occupations.
Then we will visit two medieval sites, Odiham Castle on the Basigstoke Canal, and Waverely Abbey. Then again we will see how people lived by visiting the Open Air Museum at Singleton – which shows living conditions from Saxon to Post Medieval. Then finally the Post Medieval site of Basing House, subject to a Civil War siege
Old Winchester Hill is a large Iron Age Hill fort which may have served as a fortification, settlement or agricultural enclosure. Within it are Bronze Age Barrows. Nearby are Neolithic Long Barrows, and Romano British settlements. The Society has an ongoing project to trace the route of a Roman Road running from Winchester to Chichester via Old Winchester Hill. These will be visited. The date of this first Tour is Sunday 1 August 2010
