Plan of Chilcomb Concrete

Plan of the strips of concrete found on the Chilcomb Zig Zag. The base line running along the base of the Cut-back is on the left of the plan, after which the land rises up to the south. The strips are level running across the north base line 0 - 6N - but are climbing Eastwards. The chalk surface is falling slightly going N. The thin dashed lines are piles of concrete pieces at different angles - presumed to have been dug up and dumped in heaps. The most northerly is one or two large pieces. The sections marked S are sand coloured. It was originally thought that the concrete was laid on sand, but it also occurs inside the concrete - and is not sand but a softer non crystalline material. 6N is start of hollow way for modern lane - along which a concrete strip outcrops. X marks an excavated pot hole with brick dated after 1700AD.

Features added after 2015 excavations: Dotted sections are very hard concrete. Thick dashed lines on the southern edge of the southern concrete strip bend downwards and appear to come to an end. There is some indication that they occurred elsewhere on these concrete strips but do not survive - they may be responsible for the large amounts of such concrete lumps found in the chalk.
